Local experts say mild winter could mean more bugs later this year

You might need more bug spray this spring and summer if our mild winter continues.

Local exterminators are warning of a possible increase in the amount of bugs you may encounter if it stays mild.

They said a common misconception is that we need a long prolonged freeze in the winter to kill off bugs. Instead they said we need to see extreme ups and downs in the temperatures.

"We have to have the extreme temperatures back and forth where the insects can't adapt to that. They're ready for the hard freeze. They're ready for the winter but they can't sustain the back and forth temperatures," said Jerry Smith with Advantage Termite and Pest Control.

Smith said usually they see a drop in business during the winter but this year, they've remained steady.
