The Iowa caucus is February 3, 2020, and there a few changes that you might need to be aware of if you head to your location this year.

Democrats will want this year to be more transparent. Raw vote totals, as well as the final delegate numbers, will be counted, so the outcome could be a little different.

"The first vote that is taken, whoever you choose in the first round, will be counted," Lee County Democrat Chair Mary Reisberg said. "So even if a candidate ends up with no delegates, the public will know how many people supported that candidate."

At the Republican caucus, participants simply cast a vote of support.

Candidate Donald Trump in 2016 said the event has a lot of importance for the presidential race. Back on February 1, 2016, he said, "We gotta win Iowa."

"The caucus is more than the poll that we do for our presidential candidate," Lee County Republican Chair Martin Graber said. "It has to do a lot with our workings of the Lee County party and also with starting the national platforms."

Now one of the biggest changes for a democrat caucus is the satellite caucus.

It will happen in Keokuk at the Labor Union Temple on 3rd and Blondeau and it will start at 1 p.m., hours before the regular caucus at 7 p.m. to promote more people in getting involved in the process.

Reisberg said the goal is to allow people who work second or third shift a way to still have their voice heard.

"These will be even quicker because delegates are not assigned at the caucus," Reisberg added. "People can come in and have a shorter caucus but still have their voices heard because they would be left out of the process."

Those satellite caucus will happen in 96 locations across the country and world including Scotland, France, and the Republic of Georgia.

Remember, you must be registered to vote in order to caucus. If you are thinking of switching parties, you can do that at your local precinct.

Party chairs say get there early to avoid waiting in line.

"In 2016, we were at the West Point American Legion and we had hundreds of people," Graber said, "We filled the entire upper floor with people that wanted their say."

Finally, a caucus is not an election.

It is a way for people to show their support for a candidate, and tell the parties what issues are important.

It only comes around every four years and Iowans take this process seriously.
