LEWISTOWN, Mo (WGEM) — Multiple fire crews responded to an early morning house fire at 201 E. Main Street around 6:30 a.m. in Lewistown, Missouri Tuesday.

The call came in just before 6:30 a.m. to 201 E. Main St., according to Marion County 911.

"Upon arrival, they found four occupants that were already evacuated from the home, everyone made it out safely," Newark Rural Fire Department Public Information Officer Carol York said.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol, Highway 6 in Lewistown was temporarily blocked while crews worked to fight the fire. Drivers were asked to avoid the area so first responders could get to the scene. The highway has since reopened.

"You can see everyone's kinda watching their footing around here, the sidewalks and everything's a little bit icey, we have to be careful with the equipment, keep the water flowing so it doesn't ice up."

Single-digit temperatures caused additional problems for firefighters. The water used to fight the fire on the ground around the house and fire trucks quickly iced over.

First responders were able to get out of the cold air thanks to Park United Methodist Church opening it's doors.

"Anything like this that happens and it doesn't happen very often but when it does we try to help each other out, it's really a unique place," Pastor Carolyn Leaver said.

"If there's any way we can help, we're gonna do it, reach out to other churches to see if we can get them some help."

"All in all, it was a pretty good outcome for an early morning structure fire, when you hit that time where everyone is getting ready and you never know how many people you're gonna get to respond," York added.

Fire crews believe the fire started in a first-floor bathroom and was accidental, but added the investigation is still ongoing.

It is unknown if the family can return to the home.

The R-4 Fire Protection District, Marion County R-2 Fire Department, and Monticello, Missouri Fire Department, Lewis County Ambulance District, Lewis County Sheriff's Office, MoDOT Northeast District, and Missouri State Highway Patrol also responded to the fire.
