QUINCY (WGEM) — Quincy University’s Board of Trustees announced Thursday that it had elected two new members.

The Board reported that Bishop Fernand Cheri, III and Steve Campbell ’73 began their service this semester and joined the current board of 26 men and women from across the country, including 16 Quincy University alumni.

"We are pleased to welcome Bishop Cheri and Steve Campbell as the newest Board of Trustees members," said Brian McGee, president of the university. "They join the board at an exciting time with several strategic initiatives underway, all intended to enhance our academic quality and student support and to create a strong and vibrant QU. Our new and continuing trustees are essential to the success and professionalism of QU, while former trustees are wonderful advocates for a university they know very well."

Bishop Fernand Cheri, III

Bishop Cheri is the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Before Bishop Cheri was ordained a bishop, he served as the director of campus ministry at QU from June 2011 to February 2015.

Bishop Cheri entered the Franciscan Order in 1992, previously he was a priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans for thirteen years. Besides his ministerial responsibilities in the Archdiocese, Bishop Cheri serves on numerous national committees; such as United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Safe Environment Committee, the Episcopal Moderator of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association, Episcopal Liaison for African Conference of Catholic Clergy and Religious in the U.S., Vice President for the National Black Catholic Congress Board, and Convener of the Black Catholic Bishops.

He also remains involved with Archbishop James P. Lyke (a deceased Franciscan Bishop of the Sacred Heart Province) Foundation, which dedicates its time to the development of Black Catholic Worship.

Bishop Cheri is the first bishop to serve on the QU Board of Trustees.
