February is Heart Month and local doctors said you should know your risk of a heart of attack before it's too late.

Dr. Richard Valuck a cardiologist at Hannibal Regional said you can get a heart screening and or a calcium scoring test (CT imaging test) to evaluate your heart's health.

"Blood tests, basically one poke in the arm, you can predict what your risk of a heart attack or a stroke is going to be over the next 10 years or so," said Valuck.

If you smoke, have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, don't know your risk factors or are concerned about your heart health you should talk with your doctor to get a heart assessment.

"It's important to catch it before the damage occurs," Valuck stated. "That's kind of like investing in anything. A little bit on the front end turns into something big on the back end. So, if you take care of your health now, then you will have a much better chance of living a longer healthier life."

For a healthier heart and lifestyle, Valuck recommends knowing your risk factor, eating a Mediterranean diet, and exercising at least three times a week for 20 minutes.
