(WGEM) -- Aaron Schock, the former Congressman for Illinois' 18th congressional district from 2009 until 2015, has come out as gay, according to a post on his Instagram account Thursday morning.
Schock had previously been criticized for not supporting LGBTQ legislation.
Schock's post stated, “I can live openly now as a gay man because of the extraordinary, brave people who had the courage to fight for our rights when I did not: community activists, leaders, and ordinary LGBT folks.”
“The truth is that if I were in Congress today, I would support LGBTQ rights in every way I could,” Schock stated. “I realize that some of my political positions run very much counter to the mainstream of the LGBTQ movement, and I respect them for those differences. I hope people will allow for me the same.”
The former Republican U.S. Rep. resigned from office in 2015 after media scrutiny that led to a federal investigation, but the charges were ultimately dropped in 2019.
