QUINCY, IL (WGEM) - Are you're concerned that your pet may get or carry COVID-19? We asked a local vet if that's possible.

Dr. Bob Reich said while they have been vaccinating dogs for a coronavirus for years, it's not COVID-19. He said you should not be worried that your pet will get sick with this virus.

"Our domestic animals, or domestic pets, do not carry this particular virus," said Reich. "Now, who knows, maybe it'll mutate in a year or two and it will, but at this point, they're 100% safe."

Reich said if you are wondering about the tiger that was tested positive for the virus at New York Zoo, he said he wasn't surprised. He said it is typical for caged tigers to develop a feline immune deficiency. This is something pet owners don't have to worry about he said.

He adds if you happen to have or get COVID-19, be careful coughing or sneezing around your pet as they could carry it on their fur.
