A Hannibal staple, the national fence painting competition, returned Friday afternoon.

Parents lined up with the kids for the the pee-wee, girls' and local categories.

The kids dress in Tom Sawyer inspired costumes and race to paint a white fence.

Judges grade the kids on their speed and quality.

No matter who came out on top, parents like Cole Buckman, who's daughter Alyssa painted a fence, said it's always a fun event.

"It's her second year doing it, she doesn't worry about time, she worries about the quality and getting it covered," said Buckman, "and the people behind her, she has no issues getting everybody else covered, she wants to make sure she gets it done right, and she's having a good time doing it."

Fence painting continues Saturday with the boys state, national, and over 30 categories.
