HANNIBAL (WGEM) — The COVID-19 pandemic couldn't stop Hannibal from naming their new Tom and Becky at National Tom Sawyer Days on Saturday.
Colin Brown and Riah Wigfall found out they were the Tom and Becky ambassadors in front of a crowd of hundreds.
Both said it's an honor to be chosen and they're excited to be part of the Tom and Becky program.
"While all the Beckys were great, I never had a Becky that looked like me," Wigfall said. "So being a Becky this year it just makes me so happy that I can show all the little girls and boys that they can do anything they put their hearts to."
"I wasn't really expecting it to be me and then like the [out-going] Becky, she like started to get to a step-stool out on a different Tom and I was 'Oh nice job', and then she like did like a weird circle thing and that was like wait a minute so I was just kind of like really shocked," said Brown recalling the moment he was chosen by the out-going Becky.
Tom and Becky organizers said while COVID-19 has affected the schedules for events for the Tom and Becky's from last year, they're still working to make sure they get a chance to visit the Mark Twain House.
