Lee County man drowns in Mississippi River

LEE COUNTY, Iowa (WGEM) — A Donnellson, Iowa, man drowned Saturday while riding on a pull-behind flotation device on the Mississippi River.

Sheriff Stacy Weber stated that on Saturday the Lee County Sheriff’s Office was called to assist with locating Devyn Broeker, 24.

Weber stated Broeker was riding on a pull-behind flotation device on the Mississippi River near the Sandusky sand bar at 5:45 p.m. before he went missing.

State DNR Officers located Broeker's body using side-scanning sonar and deputies of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team along with Fort Madison Fire & Rescue, Keokuk Fire & Rescue, the Keokuk Volunteer Emergency Corps recovered Broeker’s body.

Weber stated that an autopsy will be performed by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office at a later date in accordance with an Iowa law that all drowning victims be subject to an autopsy.

Weber stated the official cause of death is pending and no foul play is suspected at this time.
