The Quincy City Council gathered Monday, not only for their weekly scheduled meeting, but also to honor and remember Third Ward Alderman Tom Ernst, after he died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon.

Quincy Mayor Kyle Moore, aldermen and family members of Ernst talked about what he meant to the city of Quincy.

Ernst was elected to the Quincy City Council in 2017 having previously served on the Quincy Park Board from 2011 to 2017 as well as from 1993 to 2005.

Ernst recently was hired to be the women’s golf coach at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri.

"Tom was always there to listen," Moore said. "Tom would spend time to get to know the issues. If he had questions, he would ask it and he would let you know where he was at. We appreciated his dedication to the community. He loved our city and it's certainly not just his time as an alderman, but his nearly 20 years of service on the Quincy Park District. The number of community organizations that he volunteered for, we're going to miss him."

Moore said there is no talk of plans for his vacancy on the city council as of right now.
