QUINCY (WGEM) - The United Way of Adams County is working to help organizations stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.
They will officially kick off their “Starts With You” campaign Wednesday night. That money goes towards their goal of raising $1.1 million in 2020.
The organization said they’ve already raised over $200,000 of that goal, but they’re hoping this event will be a big push towards meeting their mark.
This event is also different because it’s completely virtual this year.
COVID-19 has made it difficult for the United Way to put on their usual events, but they’re working to keep it interesting and keep raising money for the community.
“Organizations that we support throughout the community are very very diverse. We help everyone from the Boy Scout to Horizons to developmental opportunities and educational opportunities. There truly isn’t an area of our community that we don’t have an impact on, " said Philip Krupps, “Starts With You” campaign chairman.
All of that money goes toward helping organizations in the community like the Horizons food pantry.
The pantry has seen an increase in need because a lot of people are sick or out of work and they are turning to the food pantry for help.
The donations from United Way specifically go towards the Horizons soup kitchen.
Executive director Sarah Stephens said much of the work that Horizons does wouldn’t be possible without donations from groups like the United Way.
“It gives us an opportunity to do what we do best and that’s feed hungry people, when we don’t always have to be focused on fundraising and the United Way does a great job of that,” Stephens said.
