Have you seen a bat in your home recently?
McDonough County Health Department environmental health officials say they're responding to more calls regarding bats in homes this month.
Chris Adams, McDonough County Health Department's Director of Environmental Health says bats, among other wild animals, may carry rabies.
Adams says the safest thing you can do is prevent wild animals from coming into your home in the first place.
"Check screens, make sure there's no rips in screens, not leaving your doors open…those kind of things," Adams said.
He says never try to handle a bat on your own.
According to Illinois law, it's illegal to kill a bat.
Adams says to contact your local health department if you do wind up finding a bat in your home.
