Fort Madison officials say they're looking to fill a now-vacant city council seat.

Third ward councilman Tyler Miller announced he was stepping down just one year into his four year term to serve in the armed forces earlier this week.

City officials said those interested in filling his position should submit a letter of intent to city hall as soon as possible.

"As people get their letters of intent in, the process will move fast and we hope to have someone appointed in 60 days," mayor Matt Mohrfeld said.

City officials said they'll miss having Miller on the council and wish him the best.

"We want to give him godspeed in serving our country and we take the time he did give us, we wish it had been longer, but we understand he's on a new adventure and I hope all goes well with him in the future," he said.
