Efforts to establish a Marion and Ralls county port authority are moving forward, as area economic development officials said a study is underway to determine some factors of the project.
Hannibal Regional Economic Development Council officials said they're requesting consulting services to study where a port would go if Ralls and Marion county were to establish a shared port authority, as well as a marketing plan to identify everything that port would do.
They said they expect results on that study by mid October.
"They might acquire a piece of property because it has nice frontage to the river but it's small, then they have trouble when they might have an organization trying to make an investment there when there's not enough land, so that creates some difficulties sometimes so we're trying to be cognizant of that in our planning," said Hannibal Regional Economic Development Council Executive Director Corey Mehaffy.
He said they're looking to be prepared to apply for grant money for the 2021-2022 year.
Mehaffy said the ultimate goal is for this port to be part of the larger port statistical area around the Tri-States.
