QUINCY (WGEM) -- The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is hosting a free statewide Asian Carp Cookout at nine locations, including one in Quincy.

The cookouts are part of an effort to expand the local food options and also to remove Asian Carp from Illinois waterways.

Locally, Red Light Bar & Grill plans to serve up Asian Carp sliders. They'll also be offered as the daily special for the next week.

Mike Matlick, the Vice President of the Midwest Fish Co-op and President of the Illinois Commercial Fishing Association, hopes people come to try the fish.

“People are skittish about trying new things. But if we offer it to them as a free sample already prepared maybe they’ll come out and try it and some people will like it," Matlick said. “It’s a non-stop job trying to figure out what we’re going to do with these fish. Make different products. Sell them at fertilizer, food, just a whole type of a variety for ways to get rid of them.”

The cookout will be held Saturday, October 17th at the Red Light Bar and Grill at 428 Maine Street from 12-2 pm.
