(WGEM) -- Illinois Congressman Darin LaHood is seeking federal relief for people dealing with huge natural gas bills by asking the federal government to help local communities, such as Pittsfield.
He and Congressman Rodney Davis are asking congressional leaders for an immediate emergency appropriation that would give money to municipalities, businesses, and people struggling to pay the bills.
LaHood also wants the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to investigate claims of price gouging and look at ways to keep this from happening again.
"In the Midwest, we're used to cold weather, we're used to storms, we're used to ice," said LaHood.
"But we're not used to these types of prices and this to me seems a bit unusual and out of the norm, and requires investigation at the highest level."
LaHood says any appropriations bill would need to be passed through congress.
He hopes to attach a relief bill onto one of the several COVID-19 relief bills going through congress right now, with the goal of getting it passed as soon as possible.
