QUINCY, IL (WGEM) -- If you're putting off the lawn work and thinking of having someone else do it, local experts say be careful.
Quincy BBB officials say lawn care scams are targeting area residents.
They say there are a few ways scammers look to take advantage of the situation.
They said sometimes people lose money when they pay someone to cut their lawn or do landscaping, but it either takes too long, the person does poor work, or uses cheap or watered down products. In other cases, workers don't even show up.
“You will have those people who will come in to an area. They just go from town to town and say they’re going to do something and they just never do them. So before you give your money to anyone investigate them, because they could take your money and be gone before they even do any work," said Don O'Brien, Quincy BBB.
O'Brien says these scammers can be difficult to catch because they often come from out of town and are gone before residents notice a problem, so it’s important to report anything suspicious to the BBB and local authorities when you see it.
The Better Business Bureau says there are ways to protect yourself from becoming a scam victim.
They say to ask for references and pictures of past work the company has completed. You shoud also ask if they are licensed and insured, and try to schedule an in-person yard consultation before any work is done.
