MARION COUNTY, MO (WGEM) -- Palmyra fire officials believe lightning was the cause of a barn fire in West Quincy overnight.

At approximately 11 p.m. on Wednesday, the barn that housed the hogs caught fire.

Palmyra Fire Department, Tri-Township Fire Department, and Quincy Fire Department responded to the scene minutes after.

Palmyra Fire Chief Gary Crane believes lightning struck an electrical pole, caught fire, and spread to the barn.

Crane said the barn is a total loss.

Fire officials believe that all 5,000 of the hogs that were inside are okay.

A fire investigator is expected on scene later in the day to search the barn as the sun comes up.
