QUINCY (WGEM) -- The Memorial Bridge closure has been delayed again according to Illinois Department of Transportation officials.
IDOT Public Information Officer Paul Wappel told WGEM News that they expected to start the project mid-week, but it has now been pushed back to this Friday at the earliest. But Wappel added it would most likely not happen until next week.

The closure was originally scheduled to begin on April 1. However, on March 31 it was rescheduled to begin this week.
Officials stated, once closed two-way traffic will be maintained on the Bayview Bridge (westbound U.S. 24). The Bayview Bridge will be posted with a maximum width of 14 feet during the closure of the Memorial Bridge.
The closure is for a $7.25 million project that consists of resurfacing the bridge deck, joint replacements and repairs, painting, structural steel repairs, lighting replacement, and repairs, and other miscellaneous work. Benefits from the project include providing a smoother road surface, installing safety equipment, and needed maintenance to the structure.
IDOT stated it is currently reviewing long-term plans for replacing the Quincy Memorial Bridge and will be seeking input at a public meeting to be held later this year.
Once started, the project is expected to take 8 months to complete.
