WINCHESTER, Ill. (WGEM) -- The town of Winchester's city-wide cleanup is back, and people can get rid of things they no longer want.

Monday was the first day of the city's yearly cleanup, where workers will come pick up trash, including those bigger items that won't fit in a normal garbage can.

Winchester Utilities Superintendent John Simmons explained why the city does this every year.

"What I'm afraid of is that a lot of people don't have places to get rid of things," said Simmons.

"This will eliminate it from being dumped off in the country or dumped off in places you don't want to see it... We're hoping with our assistance that won't happen."

Simmons says he likes playing a role in keeping his community clean.

"It helps keep our town clean and it's a way for people, elderly people, to get rid of everything," said Simmons. The labor helps load it all. Some people don't have trucks or trailers and it just helps keep the community clean."

The hours for the cleanup are 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. It ends this Thursday.

There are some things you can't throw away, including paint, tires, and certain appliances.
