HANNIBAL (WGEM) -- A squabble over the sale of a pool table was at the center of a homicide Wednesday in Hannibal, according to the Hannibal Police Department's probable cause statement filed in the Tenth Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri.

Investigators said Shang Williams, 46, identified by the coroner's office as the victim, was shot to death by John Kurth, 24, of New London, after Kurth tried to purchase a pool table from Williams.

The documents state that Kurth told police he paid $800 to Williams for the pool table then went to pick it up.

Kurth told police he then learned the pool table did not belong to Willams and Williams had not paid the actual owner of the pool table.

According to police, Kurth said he then went to Williams' home in the 1500 block of Broadway to get his money back.

Kurth stated that Williams' told him that now was not a good time, to which Kurth said he told Williams he would file a report.

Court documents state that Williams' wife then heard Williams tell someone to leave the home and then saw him fighting with a man in the doorway.

Williams' wife told police she saw the man pull a gun and shoot Williams. She said he then shot Williams several more times after he was on the ground.

Police said Kurth was taken into custody Wednesday night shortly after the shooting and was charged Thursday with Second Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action.

All suspects are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
